Unidentified men burned early morning yesterday (October, 26, 2011) the transmitters and other equipment of radio station DZVT-AM and DZVT-FM operated by the Catholic Media Network in San Jose, Mindoro Occidental. KBP president Ruperto S. Nicdao, Jr. condemned the burning as a barbaric crime. The full statement follows.

“The Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Piliipinas (KBP) strongly condemns the burning of radio stations DZVT-AM and DZVT-FM of the Catholic Media Network in San Jose, Mindoro Occidental this morning. This is a barbaric crime committed by persons who have complete disregard for the law and utter disrespect for the norm of civilized conduct.

The burning of the DZVT stations is not #only mere crime against private property. There is a sense that every radio station in our country belongs to the community that it serves. Whatever the motives of the perpetrators, their crime transgresses the freedom of every Filipino citizen to speak freely and to listen freely to the ideas of others. It is a crime against all of us who uphold the democratic way of life.

The burning of the DZVT stations further deepens the culture of impunity that has caused the harassment and killing of Filipino journalists to continue. We call on the authorities to act quickly to find the perpetrators and bring them to justice.”
